About the book
Mark D. Stansbury-O’Donnell surveys Greek art across a remarkably long span, from the Bronze Age through the Hellenistic world. Sculpture, pottery, architecture and other forms are placed within the political, social and cultural settings in which they were produced, so that stylistic change is treated as part of Greek history rather than as a sequence of isolated masterpieces.
The chapters alternate between the history of artistic styles and the places where art was made and encountered: homes, burial grounds, sanctuaries and cities. There is space, too, for questions of storytelling, identity, trade and the people who commissioned or bought these objects. A vase or statue is never quite detached from the life it once belonged to.
