Alexander the Great: What to Read

Alexander conquered the Persian Empire, marched as far as India and became one of the most famous rulers in history. The broad story is easy enough to follow. Working out who Alexander actually was is much harder. Our surviving accounts were written after his death, they do not always agree, and they helped shape the legend that still surrounds him. Start with the Macedonia Alexander inherited, follow him east through the conquest, then come back to the ancient writers and see how different Alexanders emerge from the same extraordinary life.
