About the book
Felix Arnold approaches ancient Egyptian architecture through fifteen carefully chosen monuments spanning roughly three millennia. Rather than presenting an encyclopaedic catalogue of buildings, he uses structures such as the Djoser complex, Bent Pyramid, Hatshepsut’s Thebes, the Great Hypostyle Hall and the temple at Edfu to show how Egyptian ideas about space, power, landscape and religious community changed over time.
Writing as an archaeologist and architectural historian, Arnold pays close attention to how buildings were designed and experienced. His reconstruction drawings and photographs help recover lost spaces, making it easier to imagine the movement through a temple, the play of light in a hall or the relationship between a monument and the landscape around it.
