About the book
On the Antonine Wall near Glasgow, the Roman fort at Bearsden has left more than traces of its defences. Excavations between 1973 and 1982 brought to light a bath-house, a latrine and material from a garrison stationed on Rome’s northern frontier.
David J. Breeze, who excavated the site, recounts its rediscovery and explains what the finds reveal about building and living in the fort. Archaeological evidence sits alongside reconstruction drawings, showing how excavated remains can be used to recover the form of vanished buildings. Water, washing and sanitation were part of life at this frontier post as surely as walls and barracks.
