Gandharan Art and the Classical World: A Short Introduction

Gandhara sat at a meeting point of cultures, and its art reflects a world connected far beyond its own region. Peter Stewart uses that setting to examine the relationship between Gandharan visual culture and the classical traditions of the Mediterranean.

Forms associated with the Hellenistic and Roman worlds travelled east through networks of movement and exchange, but they did not arrive unchanged. In Gandhara they were adapted within a different artistic and cultural setting. The story becomes one of contact and transformation, showing both how far classical visual traditions could travel and how differently they could be remade once they did.
