Greek Lives (Oxford World's Classics)

Plutarch’s Lives pair leading figures from Greek and Roman history in order to explore character, leadership, ambition and moral choice. Greek Lives brings together a selection of the Greek biographies, presenting figures whose careers span the political and military history of the classical and Hellenistic worlds.

Translated by Robin Waterfield with an introduction and notes by Philip A. Stadter, this Oxford World’s Classics edition places Plutarch’s subjects and biographical method in context. The volume is valuable both as a collection of compelling ancient biographies and as a source for understanding how a Greek writer of the Roman imperial period interpreted the personalities and events of the Greek past.
