Parian Polyandreia: The Late Geometric Funerary Legacy of Cremated Soldiers’ Bones on Socio-Political Affairs and Military Organizational Preparedness in Ancient Greece

At the cemetery of Paroikia on Paros, two monumental graves held the cremated remains of numerous men in the late eighth century BC. Their bones survive only as fragments altered by fire, yet Anagnostis P. Agelarakis uses those fragments to investigate the people who were buried, their health and lives, and the choices made by the community that honoured them.

The study concentrates on graves T144 and T105, combining anthropological measurements with an examination of their funerary setting. Agelarakis also considers what these collective burials might say about early Greek warfare, civic organisation and Parian activity elsewhere in the Aegean, including links proposed with Thasos. Those wider historical connections are arguments drawn from the evidence, not identities that the cremated bones alone can establish.
