About the book
The Romano-British Villa and Anglo-Saxon Cemetery at Eccles, Kent revisits excavations conducted between 1962 and 1976 in the Medway valley. Nick Stoodley and Stephen R. Cosh reassess the villa’s long architectural history before turning to the large cemetery established south of it in the seventh century and used into the later Saxon period.
The burials, grave goods and remains of an Anglo-Saxon timber building reveal a landscape that changed profoundly after the Roman period, without losing all connection to its earlier occupation. Jillian Hawkins’s study of local place-names and Courtnay Konshuh’s account of the documentary evidence add a different view of the valley, extending the archaeological report beyond the villa walls and cemetery graves.
