About the book
Achilles beside Gilgamesh explores the relationship between two of the ancient world’s great epic traditions: the Mesopotamian Epic of Gilgamesh and Homer’s Iliad. Michael Clarke examines how both works confront mortality, friendship, heroic violence and the search for wisdom, using comparison not simply to identify parallels but to deepen the interpretation of each poem.
The study begins with Gilgamesh on its own terms before turning to Achilles and the emotional movement of the Iliad, particularly the hero’s response to the death of Patroclus and to the certainty of his own fate. Scholarly but approachable, the book offers readers interested in Homer, Mesopotamian literature and comparative epic a focused study of how early poetry grappled with the limits of heroic life.
