About the book
Alexander’s death did not bring an end to his story. John Boardman follows the conqueror through the centuries after his lifetime, asking how his image was preserved, reshaped and put to new uses in art, legend, literature and historical memory.
Boardman’s subject is the Alexander remembered after the campaigns were over. Different societies inherited different Alexanders, and he traces how those versions changed from antiquity into the modern world. It is a compact study of reception that shows why Alexander remained such a powerful figure long after the political world he created had disappeared.
