About the book
Archaeologies of the Roman Mediterranean honours the work of Simon Keay, whose research helped reshape the study of Roman ports, trade and connections across the Mediterranean. Edited by Kristian Strutt, Anna Collar, Paul Johnson and Katherine Crawford, the collection draws together archaeologists working on the questions that occupied Keay throughout his career, particularly the movement of people and goods between ports, towns and their surrounding landscapes.
The contributions move from amphorae and maritime exchange to river systems, settlement and Roman urbanism, including research connected to Portus and wider Mediterranean port networks. Some revisit projects in which Keay was closely involved; others follow lines of enquiry his work helped establish. Personal recollections sit alongside new archaeological research, giving the book a second subject: the collaborations through which knowledge of the Roman Mediterranean is made.
