About the book
Christopher Rowe’s 2023 Oxford Classical Texts edition presents Aristotle’s Eudemian Ethics as a Greek critical text. It is not an English translation. The edition includes Books I–III and VII–VIII, treating the disputed common books without prejudging the long-running question of whether they belong originally to the Eudemian or Nicomachean Ethics.
Rowe freshly collated the principal Greek manuscripts, incorporated an additional witness and provides a substantially expanded critical apparatus as part of a renewed attempt to establish the text. Important editorial arguments are developed further in the separate companion volume Aristotelica. This is therefore a specialist philological edition for readers working directly with Aristotle’s Greek and with the textual history of the Ethics, rather than an introductory reading edition of Aristotle’s moral philosophy.
Why this edition?
Christopher Rowe’s 2023 Oxford Classical Texts edition is a Greek critical text based on fresh collation of the principal manuscripts, an additional manuscript witness and a substantially expanded apparatus criticus. It is the edition to consider for specialist textual work on the Eudemian Ethics, not for readers seeking an English translation.
