About the book
Chris Chinnock publishes excavations at Stanton in Suffolk where a Bronze Age barrow and an Anglo-Saxon cemetery occupied the same landscape thousands of years apart. Fieldwork undertaken between 2013 and 2014 provides evidence for both prehistoric funerary monumentality and early medieval burial practice.
Excavation before residential development uncovered considerably more than earlier investigations had suggested: a prehistoric round barrow and 67 inhumation burials accompanied by grave goods. Analyses of human bones, textiles, organic remains and stable isotopes build a picture of the cemetery that the grave plans alone could not supply. The report examines the Bronze Age monument and early medieval burials together while keeping their very different dates and contexts clear.
