About the book
Ceramics and Atlantic Connections follows pottery moving between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic seaboard during the final Roman centuries and the early Middle Ages. Nine papers examine North African and eastern Mediterranean imports alongside ceramics made within the Atlantic region, from Britain and Ireland to western Gaul, Galicia and Portugal.
One study uses automated electron-microscopy analysis to investigate a red-slip pottery fragment found in Ireland; others consider the ceramic evidence from western Gaul, the area around Lisbon and the Roman trading landscape of Galicia. Amphorae, fine tablewares and locally produced vessels help the contributors test how maritime exchange endured and changed after the political fragmentation of the western Roman Empire. The volume belongs to the Roman and Late Antique Mediterranean Pottery series.
