About the book
Euripides’ surviving plays reach us through manuscripts that do not always agree, and some are particularly difficult to reconstruct. This second edition of James Diggle’s Greek text returns to six of them: Suppliant Women, Electra, Heracles, Trojan Women, Iphigenia among the Taurians and Ion. Behind scenes of grief, revenge and disputed identity lies a second, quieter drama: deciding which ancient words can be recovered from the surviving evidence.
More than four decades after his original Volume II, Diggle has reconsidered difficult passages throughout, consulting manuscripts afresh and incorporating newly published papyri. A substantially rebuilt critical apparatus records competing readings and conjectures, including corrected attributions. This is a scholarly Greek text for close study, not an English translation or an introduction to the plots.
Why this edition?
James Diggle’s Oxford Classical Texts volume is a specialist Greek critical edition, not an English translation. It is the appropriate edition for advanced work with these six plays and their textual tradition, supported by the OCT critical apparatus.
