About the book
Garranes was one of the exceptional ringforts of early medieval Ireland: not simply a farmstead, but a high-status centre associated with political authority, elite residence and specialised craft activity. William O’Brien and Nick Hogan present the results of an interdisciplinary project that returned to this important mid-Cork site through survey, excavation and a wide range of specialist analyses.
Excavators found traces of bronze ornament-making, glass and enamel working, and imported pottery and glass vessels that connect Garranes with the wider world beyond south-west Ireland. The authors revisit the 1937 discoveries alongside fieldwork carried out between 2011 and 2018, asking how the ringfort functioned within its landscape. Later poetry remembered the area as a royal seat; the archaeological evidence gives that tradition something tangible to be tested against, without making the legend itself a proven account.
