Greek Art in Motion: Studies in Honour of Sir John Boardman on the Occasion of His 90th Birthday

Greek images and objects did not stay in one place. They moved from workshops into sanctuaries, houses and trading communities, then found new lives in collections and museums. Greek Art in Motion gathers more than fifty studies presented at a 2017 congress in Lisbon honouring Sir John Boardman, whose career has been central to the study of Greek art across the Mediterranean.

One essay looks at priestesses in Greek sculpture; another tests what names on Athenian vases can really tell us. Others turn to collectors of engraved gems, excavations at Emporios on Chios and the afterlives of ancient sculpture. Coins, terracottas, architecture and Greek communities overseas sit alongside questions about how objects have been interpreted long after their makers were gone.
