About the book
Excavations along the Empingham to Hannington pipeline in Northamptonshire and Rutland exposed nineteen archaeological sites, providing a long transect through the changing settlement landscape of the south-east Midlands. Simon Carlyle, Jason Clarke and Andy Chapman concentrate on evidence from the Iron Age, Roman and Anglo-Saxon periods.
The narrow pipeline trench revealed Iron Age enclosures and roundhouses, fragments of Roman field systems and burials, and an early Anglo-Saxon cemetery. Yet the finds do not describe one settlement occupied continuously for centuries; there is little sign of a smooth transition from Iron Age to Roman use. The excavators piece together changing patterns of settlement from separate, incomplete glimpses of the same wider countryside.
