About the book
Kom al-Ahmer and Kom Wasit stood close to the Nile Delta routes linking inland Egypt with Mediterranean ports. Excavations there have yielded evidence of that traffic on a remarkable scale: more than 1,070 coins dating from around 310 BC to AD 641, and some 1,320 examples of Late Roman and early Islamic pottery. This second volume of the archaeological project publishes the coins and ceramics recovered during the 2012–2016 investigations.
Michele Asolati and Cristina Crisafulli study the coins, including their mints and findspots, while Cristina Mondin examines pottery from different occupation contexts at Kom al-Ahmer. Imported vessels appear alongside Egyptian wares, allowing trade, consumption and settlement to be followed through the political changes that took Egypt from Roman into early Islamic rule.
