About the book
Life on the Farm in Late Medieval Jerusalem examines the village of Beit Mazmil and its agricultural and industrial landscape over roughly five centuries. Edited by Bethany J. Walker, the volume uses archaeological evidence to reconstruct the people who lived and worked on the site rather than approaching Jerusalem only through its monumental or urban history.
The well-preserved farmstead is studied through its buildings and fields, together with botanical and geological traces and documents recording land sales, conflict and cooperation. From the fourteenth century into the early twentieth, changes in the village and its farmland reveal how rural households sustained—and were shaped by—the nearby city under Mamluk and Ottoman rule.
