About the book
The Hellenistic world is often described through mobility, connectivity and cultural fusion, but local communities did not simply dissolve into those wider networks. Edited by Sheila L. Ager and Hans Beck, Localism in Hellenistic Greece asks how poleis and regional communities understood place, tradition and belonging within an increasingly interconnected Mediterranean.
The questions become concrete in studies of the Kopaic Basin’s landscape, memories of the battlefield at Chaironeia, the civic politics of Sparta and marriage strategies that tied families to their cities. Other essays turn to festivals, diplomatic hospitality and the choices of smaller communities negotiating larger powers. Across these settings, local identity was neither fixed nor cut off from the wider world: a community could respond to far-reaching change by arguing over what made its own place distinctive.
