About the book
This excavation report presents the Roman villa and its surrounding landscape at Lyde Green, near Bristol, investigated in 2012–13. The site developed from a first-century farmstead into a villa estate by the later Roman period, and the excavations exposed substantial parts of its layout, including ancillary buildings, a bathhouse and evidence for sophisticated water management.
Alongside the stratigraphic account are specialist studies of pottery, building material, small finds, coinage, human remains and iron-working waste. Evidence for stock raising, crop processing, textile production and metalworking helps reconstruct the economy of the estate as well as its architecture. As a detailed site publication, the volume is best suited to readers of Roman Britain and field archaeology who want the evidence behind interpretations of rural settlement.
