About the book
Manuscripts in the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms brings together research on books and documents made, decorated and used in England and its neighbours from the conversion period around AD 600 to the eleventh century. Edited by Claire Breay and Joanna Story, the volume grew from scholarship surrounding the British Library’s major Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms exhibition.
Its essays follow manuscripts across Britain, Ireland and continental Europe, combining textual criticism, art history, historical research and scientific examination. Subjects range from the Lindisfarne Gospels and Wearmouth-Jarrow to Alfredian texts, Wulfstan, liturgical books and Anglo-Saxon connections with Francia, Rome and Scandinavia. Richly illustrated, it treats manuscripts as evidence for intellectual networks, artistic exchange, worship, travel and the circulation of knowledge across early medieval Europe.
