Maryport: A Roman Fort and Its Community

At Maryport on the Cumbrian coast, a Roman fort and a remarkable body of inscriptions and sculpture preserve the traces of a frontier community. David J. Breeze uses the site and the history of its excavation to explore what those remains can tell us about the people who lived there.

Military archaeology is central, but the story extends beyond the fort itself. Inscriptions, monuments and other finds help illuminate the relationship between soldiers, civilians and the wider landscape of Roman Cumbria. Breeze’s site-based approach makes Maryport a window onto the northern frontier, showing how much can be recovered from the careful study of one place and its material record.
