About the book
Stan Beckensall explores the medieval churches of Northumberland from the Anglo-Saxon period to the Reformation, using surviving buildings and their settings to trace the religious and architectural history of the county. The story begins with the Northumbrian golden age associated with Lindisfarne, Jarrow and figures such as Bede, and follows the remains of early churches through Viking disruption, Norman rebuilding and the architectural changes of the later Middle Ages.
Particular attention is given to features that still preserve this long history, including the crypt at Hexham, Anglo-Saxon towers, Norman work and later medieval additions. Northumberland’s position as a border region also shaped church building, as resources and defensive priorities affected what communities could construct and preserve. Illustrated with colour and aerial photography, the book works both as a guide to surviving sites and as an accessible introduction to the development of ecclesiastical architecture in medieval Northumberland.
