About the book
Plato is one of the most influential thinkers in history, yet reconstructing the life behind the dialogues is unusually difficult. Robin Waterfield offers a historical biography of Plato set against the upheavals of late fifth- and fourth-century BCE Athens, following him from an aristocratic childhood shaped by the Peloponnesian War through his philosophical career, travels, teaching and association with the Academy.
Waterfield combines the surviving ancient testimony with evidence from Plato’s own works while remaining alert to the uncertainty surrounding later biographical traditions. The result places philosophical development within lived historical circumstances, including Athenian politics, the legacy of Socrates and Plato’s involvement with Sicily. Written for general readers but grounded in close scholarship, this is a useful companion to Plato’s dialogues and a rare sustained attempt to understand the philosopher as a historical person.
