About the book
Less than a mile apart in Gloucestershire, two excavations uncovered very different stretches of the Frome Valley's past. At Foxes Field in Stonehouse, archaeologists found a prehistoric Beaker pit, a rural settlement occupied under Roman rule and a late Roman burial ground. At Rectory Meadows in Kings Stanley, medieval paddocks and a fishpond marked a much later use of the landscape.
Edited by Martin Watts, this report publishes both investigations in detail. Fragments of flue tiles and other building materials suggest substantial Roman buildings nearby, although no villa was directly excavated at either site. At Foxes Field, a man and woman buried together offer a glimpse of the people behind the more familiar archaeological record of fields, enclosures and buildings.
