About the book
Property and Piety in Early Medieval Winchester presents thirty-three documents dating from 902 to around 1160 that illuminate the topography, property and religious institutions of one of England's most important early medieval cities. Alexander R. Rumble provides editions, English translations and extensive commentary, allowing charters and related texts to be used alongside the archaeological history of Winchester's Old Minster, New Minster and Nunnaminster.
The documents record the physical effects of monastic foundations and expansion, the tenth-century Benedictine reform and the eventual removal of New Minster to Hyde. Particular attention is given to the celebrated New Minster refoundation charter of 966 and to problems of authenticity in other texts.
Why this edition?
This 2025 Archaeopress hardback makes Rumble’s documentary edition available with the full scholarly apparatus: thirty-three texts from 902–c.1160 are edited, translated into English and extensively commented. It is particularly useful when the reader needs the Winchester documents themselves rather than a secondary narrative of the city.
