About the book
Emilio Gabba’s Republican Rome: The Army and the Allies collects influential studies of the relationship between military change, Italian society and the political crisis of the late Republic. Gabba challenges simple accounts of the so-called Marian reforms, arguing that professionalisation emerged through a much longer process.
The essays connect recruitment and army organisation with citizenship, the Italian allies, the Social War and the transformation of Republican politics. Gabba also examines veterans’ settlement, the political actions of M. Livius Drusus and Sulla, and what Appian’s history can tell us about the Social War. Translated into English by P. J. Cuff, the collection is offered here as a University of California Press Voices Revived hardback reissue of a book first published in 1976.
