About the book
Roman Amphora Contents investigates what transport amphorae actually carried and what those contents reveal about food supply and maritime commerce. More than thirty specialists combine archaeology with epigraphy, archaeobotany, archaeozoology and scientific techniques including organic residue analysis.
Painted inscriptions, cargoes found underwater and traces absorbed into vessel walls offer different clues about a container’s original contents—and its possible later reuse. The studies move from Lusitania to Egypt and include evidence from Corinth, Pompeii and Arles. Prepared from a conference held in Cádiz in 2015 in honour of Miguel Beltrán Lloris, this edited collection shows why identifying wine, oil, fish products and other cargoes takes more than recognising an amphora’s shape.
