About the book
This major new edition of The Roman Imperial Coinage, Volume IV.3 provides a comprehensive catalogue of imperial coinage struck between AD 238 and 253, from Gordian III through Philip I, Trajan Decius and Trebonianus Gallus to Aemilian. Revised from the volume first published in 1949 and based on decades of subsequent research, Roger Bland’s study also incorporates the imperial families and the usurpers Jotapian and Pacatian.
Introductions to each reign place the coinage in its historical and monetary context, while a general introduction examines denominations, weights, metals, reverse types and hoard evidence. Medallions are included, and the catalogue records 3,351 types—roughly twice the number in the original edition—with thousands of coins illustrated across the plates. Designed as a specialist reference work rather than a general introduction, this volume is an important resource for numismatists and historians studying the political and monetary history of the mid-third-century Roman Empire.
