About the book
Oliver Dickinson examines the Aegean world between the collapse of the Bronze Age palace societies and the emergence of the Greek world of the eighth century BC. Drawing heavily on archaeological and material evidence, he asks what changed during these centuries, what survived from earlier traditions and how communities adapted after the end of the Bronze Age political order.
The study considers the causes and consequences of collapse, the processes through which the Aegean recovered and reorganised, and the extent of continuity between the so-called Dark Age and later Greek society. Maps, illustrations and chapter bibliographies support the discussion, while the Homeric question is considered within the wider problem of reconstructing a period for which the evidence is uneven. It is a detailed synthesis for readers interested in the transition from the Bronze Age to early Greece.
