About the book
When Roman armies first pushed into Scotland, the siting of a fort could matter as much as its walls. Rivers, routes and the contours of the land shaped where troops could move and where garrisons might hold territory. Many of these early fortifications are less familiar than the later frontier walls.
Andrew Tibbs returns to the landscape in which the forts were built, using archaeological remains, maps, photographs, diagrams and reconstructions to examine their positions. His account considers how Roman commanders and engineers used the ground to their advantage, and how a network of military sites formed part of an attempt to occupy and control northern Britain.
