About the book
Fifteen chamber tombs uncovered near Patras between 1988 and 1992 added a substantial new chapter to the history of Mycenaean Achaea. At Achaia Clauss, pottery, metal objects, burial architecture and human remains preserve traces of a community at the western edge of the Mycenaean world, far from its best-known palace centres.
Constantinos Paschalidis follows the cemetery through successive periods of use, setting the finds alongside the changing ways people buried and remembered their dead. Contributions by Photini J. P. McGeorge and Wiesław Więckowski examine the surviving human remains. Taken together, the graves document nearly four centuries of local life, as well as death, and reveal how much a regional cemetery can tell us about Mycenaean society beyond the palaces.
