About the book
The fourth volume of The Oxford History of the Ancient Near East covers roughly 1100–600 BC, the centuries in which Assyria grew into the dominant imperial power of western Asia and then collapsed before Babylonian and Median forces. Fifteen chapters place Assyria within a much larger political world extending from Iran and Anatolia to the Levant, Egypt and Nubia.
Edited by Karen Radner, Nadine Moeller and D. T. Potts, the chapters move from Assyria to Babylonia, Elam, Urartu, Phrygia, the Phoenician cities and the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. Egypt’s Third Intermediate Period and the rulers who came north from Napata enter the picture too. The story of Assyrian power cannot be separated from the different societies it threatened, ruled or forced to respond.
