About the book
The Oxford History of the Archaic Greek World, Volume III examines Greek communities around Cumae and Pithecusae in Italy, the Cycladic islands and Cyprus during roughly 750–480 BCE. Edited by Paul Cartledge and Paul Christesen, it forms part of a multi-volume project designed to recover histories that cannot be told through Athens and Sparta alone.
Its three substantial studies bring different kinds of evidence into conversation: written sources, inscriptions, archaeology and the physical settings of communities spread across the Mediterranean. An island group, a Cypriot region and settlements in Italy did not experience Greek identity or political development in the same way. The volume gives each setting room for its own history while making their differences possible to compare.
