About the book
From the island of Rhodes to Greek settlements in western Sicily, Volume VI of The Oxford History of the Archaic Greek World follows communities that developed under very different local conditions. Edited by Paul Cartledge and Paul Christesen, its five studies examine Rhodes, Sicyon, Syracuse, Thebes and western Sicily during the Archaic period, roughly 750–480 BCE.
The Sicilian chapters bring the story especially far from a mainland-centred history of Greece. Settlements such as Acragas, Himera and Selinus developed in landscapes shared with indigenous Sicilian and Phoenician populations; their political and cultural worlds cannot be explained by Greek migration alone. Across the volume, local archaeology and historical sources help show both the connections and the contrasts between these communities.
